Hello to all our beloved readers,
This is a simple progress blog that the two of us from YiPP will be keeping to keep track of the developments of our work. Similarly to how the two of us are enjoying the process, we hope that this would be an interesting place for people to visit for updates on the progress on our final year film. So here are some "behind the scenes" development work that helped us build the foundation of our project.
We had many ups and downs during the initial conceptualisation but we definitely had fun. Making liberal use of the creative freedom we were given, we explored with possibilities before solidifying our ideas into what they are today.
Here's how our ideas started out...
Since the earliest stages of development, both of us were very keen on working on the theme of cause and effect. More specifically, we wanted to express how each of our actions, no matter how insignificant it may seem, affects other people and how it can be portrayed in a positive light. Much like the "Butterfly Effect", a small and seemingly insignificant action has the potential to make a huge impact.
As social beings, we are always interacting with the people around us. To us, the way in which people are able to influence one another and how people are able to affect each other indirectly is an interesting topic. It is easy to disregard things that we don't experience or see for ourselves. Furthermore, it is not always our intention to affect other people's lives with our actions. While taking all these into consideration, we hope to carry a positive attitude into the message of our film and make it an enjoyable and fun piece of animation.
At the very beginning, we thought of using a universe that involves having two different worlds that requires mutual dependency to survive to highlight the idea of how people invariable affect one another without intending to do so.

From there on we explored more possibilities, and had alot of fun coming up with wacky ideas to kick start our momentum.
There were various ideas thrown in regarding the types of obstacles that prevented the two worlds from meeting one another.

Our story direction finally solidified after we condensed the two worlds into one. (It doesn't mean we changed the theme of our film though, as it still focuses on how the behaviour of one person can affect the others around him.) By doing so, we feel that it gives the story a stronger message as it emphasises how people within the same community affect one other.

Sadly, many of our attempts were not as fruitful as we would have liked them to be. Eventually, we went into the direction of using weather conditions as inspiration.

From there onwards, our story development was much more smooth sailing. By that time, our dearest grumpy weatherman character was more or less decided on and all that was left was to dive into developing the storyline, character and environment designs. Happy times ensues~
=)
